The second trimester

Movement becomes a language, and the anatomy scan is a look — not a verdict you have to pass.

  • Many people feel movement between 16 and 22 weeks.
  • An anterior placenta can muffle early kicks.
  • The anatomy scan is often offered around 18–22 weeks.
  • Energy may return; heartburn and ligament pain may arrive instead.

Learning movement

First flutters are easy to mistake for gas. They become a pattern you recognise, often by the twenties. A quiet day early on is usually nothing. Later, from about 28 weeks, the instruction changes: a lasting drop from the pattern you know is a call, not a wait. Until then, the scan and the clinic are how the pregnancy is watched.

The mid-pregnancy scan

The anatomy scan looks at brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs, placenta, and fluid. It finds many conditions and misses some. A normal result is reassuring and still not a promise. If something needs a second look, that is what follow-up is for. Write the questions you want answered before you are on the table.

Ask your midwife or doctor before you change medicine, herbs, or a birth plan.

Sizes and dates are averages. Feeding and sleep notes follow widely published public-health guidance, including World Health Organization infant-feeding advice and back-to-sleep recommendations. They are not a protocol for your hospital.
